Personality:
There are several theories as to why Ryoga has such a poor sense of direction. It has been mentioned that his parents have the very same problem, making his lack of a sense of direction most likely genetic. Regardless of the details as to why this may be, it is in his character that no matter how simple the directions may be, Ryoga is incapable of reaching his destination when he desires to. Because of this it is necessary that he lives a nomadic lifestyle. Ryoga takes much longer to reach his destinations, he usually arrives where’s he’s intended around or within a week.
Since he spends majority of his life traveling due to this poor sense of direction, Ryoga is often lonely. In fact his depression is almost a constant damper on his emotional state. For example, his lack of interaction with others makes him more sensitive to what affection he receives. Ryoga’s emotions are fragile: His feelings are hurt easily, but he also overreacts to compliments as well and becomes excessively bashful when affection is shown toward him. To put it simply, he’s overly emotional. His desperation for love is very transparent.
However, his small black piglet form seems to openly show his emotions more. It could possibly be because his identity as Ryoga is unknown to Akane, his crush, when in this form. He is more open to receiving affection and care when he is in his pig form.
Ryoga tends to be very straightforward. He’ll get to the point and state his thoughts very bluntly. Should Ryoga become confused about something, he’ll openly ask a question. If he doesn’t like someone, he will make his opinion very clear. He’ll even go as far as physical violence to get the point across if he has to. Yet, time and time again Ryoga will fail to properly admit his feelings for Akane. This pretty much applies for any female character that admits some affection or interest for Ryoga. He’ll become more indirect, and distracted and even start to stutter and glance down while blushing. He may even accidentally destroying the property around him, such as poking holes into solid surfaces with his index finger.
Likewise, when he’s angry, he’ll also accidentally destroy things around him or things he is holding. He will crush things in the palm of his hand as a way to release his anger. It is all done subconsciously or simply in blind fury. In some cases he’ll intentionally destroy things, but that’s usually when he’s trying to attack someone with them. During his first encounter with Ranma he removed an electric pole from the ground to attack Ranma with (while under the power of suggestion with vitamin tablets, all thanks to Nabiki.)
Ryoga is naive. He falls to pranks, lies, and is tricked into dirty work because of this. His oblivious nature makes him very gullible to manipulative characters. This also seems to bleed into his feelings about love and being loved. Ryoga doesn’t know how to properly confess his feelings. This causes him to scare most women away, or they are often oblivious to it. Lies are especially effective if it includes him being able to defeat Ranma and win over Akane’s love. His lack of common sense prevents him from seeing possible ulterior motives as why people would want his help to begin with, or why they may want to help him defeat Ranma.
Due to Ryoga living a nomadic lifestyle he always, always has a hiking backpack with him. His pack carries all the essentials he needs to survive in the wilderness. Among his essentials is a iron-made umbrella that is much heavier than it looks. Not only is it used as a weapon, but also as a tool to protect him from the rain or other water projectiles shot in his direction. He’s very efficient in the wild: Ryoga knows how to hunt, skin, and cook any prey he comes across if he doesn’t have any non-perishable food with him.
While Ryoga seems rough around the edges, and sometimes hard to approach, he’s actually really soft and caring on the inside. Around other guys, this side isn’t as obvious, but with girls it’s clear; he becomes shy and bashful, as stated before. Ryoga is often prone to making silly mistakes while trying to share his thoughts. Ryoga is strongly chivalrous and compassionate. Toward women he is humble and polite, treating them with the utmost respect. Ryoga is unlikely to peek on a girl while undressing and will fork over an article of his clothing if they lack proper cover.
When a woman (or even just someone defenseless and unable to fend for themselves) needs saving, Ryoga will promptly defend them even if it means receiving a severe beating. This self-sacrificing part of him probably derives from his heroic syndrome and lack of self worth. (His lack of self worth came from both his curse and his constant state of loneliness.) He would just as promptly save anyone from dying if he crosses paths with them. Because of this he gets involved in a lot of unnecessary drama. It’s likely where some of his depression comes from. He has a very generic sense of justice and will stubbornly stand by his beliefs.
It’s been shown that even while Ranma was in a weakened state, Ryoga would not take advantage of it. It will actually hurt him to know that his rival is unable to challenge him like he used to. In that generic sense of honor he defended Ranma from the rivals that willingly took advantage of his sudden weakness.
Ryoga prefers to fight honorably. At times, he’ll display his powers and techniques before battle to let the rival or enemy know what they’re in for. He will also not fight an opponent that is clearly weaker than him.
His chivalrous behavior makes it plain to see that he’s in no way a pervert. His fantasies about dating Akane are merely innocent and sweet. He’ll, of course, become overly embarrassed about his own fantasies and deny having anything of the sort, but honestly a simple kiss from the one he desires is all it takes to make him truly happy. In fact, he becomes ecstatic just receiving that type of affection alone. It’s enough to make him faint and even nosebleed. A fully exposed female body has harsher reactions. The naked body of a woman would make him turn away so fast that he might smack into something. This usually earns him some respect from the female party since he holds them to such a high degree.
For the most part, all of Ryoga’s techniques and skills are seemingly self-taught. During his travels he will pick up techniques from friendly strangers, and filtering these techniques to what he uses most before honing them. Since he is constantly traveling, he’s always training, making him a formidable opponent to many. Like most of the Ranma characters, his powers, and strengths are influenced by his emotions. The stronger the emotion is the stronger he becomes. Motivation plays a huge role in this as well. His desire to win makes him more durable, making defeating him that much harder. If he’s focused enough, he can also subconsciously destroy things while in a fight.
As a result of all his years of training, in combination with wandering aimlessly, and honing his skills, Ryoga has developed rock solid endurance. He’s capable of taking a beating most normal humans would fall to. He has high stamina; another result of his constant traveling. He is able to travel ridiculous distances with little to no breaks in between. Ryoga can even stampede for days if he’s determined enough.
Despite his physical appearance and display of melodramatic emotion, he can be quite artistic and poetic. He’ll recite poems at appropriate times to fit the mood or the atmosphere. His sensitive emotions and innocent desire in love probably influence this. He is able to see past the flaws of another or see those flaws as something positive instead. For example, when Ryoga found out about Ranma’s female half, he commented on how lucky he was to have a wonderful and beautiful female frame is (as opposed to his ugly pig transformation.)
Perhaps it is because he turns into an animal himself, but Ryoga seems to have developed the traits of a house pet through experiences with Akane as P-Chan. Ryoga appears to get along with other household animals, or tame animals in general. Some animals even become quite fond of him. It is much like the relationship with his dog Shirokuro and her pups. (His dog is the only family member of the house that has any sense of direction.)
Abilities:
Physically
By default, Ryoga is easily stronger than most characters. His inhuman strength is made quite obvious since he uses it for mundane things. In other cases he’s used his strength to move aside or destroy boulders, hurl icebergs, bend metal, and so on, and so for.
During fights he’s capable of lifting his own weight and the weight of others. For example, during his battle with Ranma in their first fight, Ranma had him pinned to the ground unable to slip out from his grip. With just one arm he was able to push both his weight and Ranma’s, enough to hurl them into the air several feet. Such strength was developed during his hiking life. The harsh travels of wandering Earth have not only made him enduring, but strong as well.
His endurance is unbelievable. The amount of abuse his body can take is unlike anything else. Ryoga has been seen plowing through forests, walls, and rock in a quick dash to find Ranma or Tokyo in general. At the time the damage sustained affected him. However, while learning the Bakusai Tenketsu, he had rock debris shot at him during the whole training. It improved his endurance significantly, making his previous reckless behavior a lot less painful.
He is undoubtedly skilled in agility, though not always as fast as Ranma, he still proves to be quick enough to keep up with Ranma during their battles. Thanks to his Rhythmic Gymnastics skill and knowledge he has become quite flexible. Not that he can’t get uncomfortable given a few unpractical positions, he still able to move his joint and muscles well enough to further his training as a martial artist. In addition to that he has extreme reflexes, being able to avoid and dodge a great deal of attacks aimed at him. His flexibity also allows him to catch fists or grapple attacks that are sent his way.
All in all he is a formidable opponent that is well balanced in physical traits.
Ryoga can travel larges distances on foot in efficient time. He can do so with little to no breaks. Due to the fact that he’s nomadic, traveling on foot is quite common, and he’s only nomadic because he’s the king of getting lost. His ability to travel such large distances is greatly beneficial since it usually takes him so long to reach his destination.
As a martial artist he has enhanced techniques, forms, and skills. Ryoga can also spring high into the air when he leaps and maneuver in mid-air.
As a pig, he loses the ability to access most of his strengths and techiniques. However, sometimes it is highly beneficial for him to become a pig. Since he becomes a smaller target, he becomes harder to hit. If he’s in an enclosed room, he will project himself from wall to wall to strike his opponent down in relentless fury swipes. His agility in this form makes it hard to see and catch him when attacking.
Techniques:
Tetsu Nuno is one of his many techniques where he channels chi into ordinary cloth, usually his bandana (which is seemingly unlimited in supply) or belt, to make it into a weapon. It’s more or less an improvised weapon. If he uses it as a projectile, it’s capable of cutting through metal, rocks, and a trees, though seldom uses it.
Martial Arts Rhythmic Gymnastics. This style means that he is capable of different acrobatics and of using gymnastic tools as a weapons to his advantage. It also implies that he is fairly flexible, nimble, and quick. This skill is only emphasized during the first season when Akane agrees to help her classmates win a Rhythmic Gymnastics competition against school-rival Kodachi. Ryoga becomes her mentor to help train her.
Bakusai Tenketsu is a technique he learned under Cologne when her attempt to teach him Amarguriken failed miserably. This technique requires seeing with the mind’s eye, or third eye, to find breaking point of any inanimate surface. Applying pressure to said point causes the surface to crack and fall apart before the user. It was this particular technique that further developed Ryoga’s inhuman endurance towards physical attacks. The projection of the debris to this attack no longer fazes him.
Shishi Houkoudan is a technique he learned during his travels by an engineer. This attack is formed by the amount of depressing feelings that gather within him. All the general energy is focused to the palms of his hands where he releases it as a power beam. It’s capable of blasting through layers of solid rock to make tunnels in mountains or underground, but Ryoga generally uses it as an attack on his foes.
Shin Shishi Houkoudan is the perfected form of the technique Shishi Houkoudan. Similar to the previous move, this one requires much more concentrated emotion. The potency of the emotion dissipates into the air where it’s collected into a sphere in Ryoga’s palm and then released into that of a hyper beam. This attack is capable of causing mass destruction, so much that even the slightest contact is enough to overwhelm and defeat an enemy. Since this attack requires and demands such raw emotion and powers, Ryoga lacks ability to control it. He often becomes drained and tired because of the amount of energy it takes to use and release it. Because this attack requires so much emotion and energy Ryoga is incapable of using it at will. Only when he is truly angered or depressed is he able to draw the energy necessary to use it.
